Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS

Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS - Joby Warrick I, admittedly, did not know much about ISIS before I cracked open BLACK FLAGS. Though I was nervous that most of the book would go completely over my head, I was pleasantly surprised that I too could dive into the world of current Middle Eastern politics with zeal. It is apparent from the start of the book that Joby Warrick is not only an award-winning journalist, but also an engaging and vivacious storyteller. Warrick traces the trajectory of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a political prisoner set free when King Abdullah of Jordan took the throne in 1999. From Zarqaqi’s troubled childhood, to his conversion to extremist Islam, to al-Qaeda and eventually the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, Warrick highlights key events that have lead to ISIS as we know it today. At once humanizing and informative, BLACK FLAGS is not only accessible to those of us who know just the basics of ISIS, but enlightening to those who follow the news stories closely.

Reckless: My Life as a Pretender

Reckless: My Life as a Pretender - Chrissie Hynde This no-holds-barred memoir by the former Pretenders front woman and iconic singer/songwriter Chrissie Hynde is not to be missed. Her prose, like her music, is powerful, unsparing, and totally honest.

Sea Lovers: New and Selected Stories

Sea Lovers: New and Selected Stories - Valerie Martin "Valerie Martin has done it again! Her collection of short stories proves she is a master of manipulating the eerie and macabre in storytelling. Sea Lovers pulls together 12 stories and each has a way of completely blending reality and fantasy in such a graceful way that it'll be hard to look at anything the same way. I was at the edge of my seat as I read each story, wondering how Martin would turn the tale on its head this time and she proved never to disappoint!" - Lauren W. Doubleday Marketing Department

The Night Sister: A Novel

The Night Sister: A Novel - Jennifer McMahon "Sometimes all you need is to hide away in bed and lose yourself in the thrill of a truly scary book. The Night Sister, I assure you, is the perfect book to immerse yourself in. I raced through the book at breakneck speed, desperate to unravel the decades-long mystery that Jennifer McMahon so expertly crafts.

The book opens from the point of view of Amy, a lifelong inhabitant of the Tower Motel and a woman preparing to kill herself and her family. What pushed her to this desperate extreme? She leaves only one clue: an old family portrait with the words “29 Rooms” written across the bottom. The novel bounces back and forth between the points of view of various Tower Motel inhabitants and across decades to weave a deeply addicting tale.

Equal parts family drama, touching portrait of female relationships, and creepy horror mystery, The Night Sister is a book that will keep you on your toes and engage you in the chase to discover the secrets of the 29th room."

Bennington Girls Are Easy: A Novel

Bennington Girls Are Easy: A Novel - Charlotte Silver “The best part of the book was how real it felt. Although I don’t share the Bennington College background (or some of the absurd wealth) with the characters, I could still easily relate to all of them. Bennington Girls Are Easy looks at the growing up everyone must do after college graduation, with some having smoother transitions into the “real world” than others. I laughed at Sylvie and Cassandra’s antics in New York, including their desperate attempts to make money (babysitting, working at a bakery, even running a lemonade stand) while their rich friends had no such worries. I admit I could see my friends and myself falling victim to these same sorts of dilemmas a few years down the road.” - Katie D., Doubleday Marketing intern

The Billion Dollar Spy: A True Story of Cold War Espionage and Betrayal

The Billion Dollar Spy: A True Story of Cold War Espionage and Betrayal - David E. Hoffman This was a fascinating read. Pulling from previously secret documents and based on interviews with people who were actually there, David E. Hoffman tells the incredibly true story of the Russian engineer who, over the course of 6 years, passed along Soviet technology and military research to members of the CIA Moscow Station and saved the Unites States billions during the Cold War. Full of suspense and intrigue, The Billion Dollar Spy is an amazing look behind the scenes of the CIA in the Soviet Union during an immensely tense time in history.

The Blumhouse Book of Nightmares: The Haunted City

The Blumhouse Book of Nightmares: The Haunted City - Jason Blum As a devout fan of horror movies, I was thrilled to explore new fiction from some of the best writers in the business. Combining the talents of several notable authors, screenwriters, and filmmakers, including Ethan Hawke, Eli Roth and many others, Jason Blum has shared with us a new work that has NO limits when it comes to scaring. Unlike the many classic horror stories centered on a desolate cabin deep in the woods, these stories take place amidst the backdrop of major cities. This book brings horror to an exciting new place in the way it shows evil can be lurking virtually anywhere- even as close as just down the street! Fans of Stephen King, as well as anyone who just appreciates thrilling storytelling, will love this gripping new addition to the world of all things frightening.

The Ambassador's Wife

The Ambassador's Wife - Jennifer Steil The Ambassador’s Wife is bursting with passion, innate desire, and a woman’s devotion to her family. It is an enthralling read that will unveil the path towards freedom every brush stroke of the way. Imbued with taboo passions, clandestine secrets, and terror in the face of peril, Steil will keep readers craving to unravel the intricacies of life as an ambassador’s wife.

In a world of jarring conflict and corruption, Miranda lives with her husband Finn. Madeleine's War

Madeleine's War - Peter Watson I'm a huge fan of stories that take place during WWII and Madeleine's War by Peter Watson was the perfect blend of romance and history! It was definitely a unique perspective on a very well know topic. One of the best war novels I have ever read and I couldn't put it down. The book takes you on a ride and gives some insight into the life of a spy during WWII.

China Rich Girlfriend: A Novel

China Rich Girlfriend - Kevin Kwan When publishing a book as deliciously fun as China Rich Girlfriend, there's always a bit of guilt involved: is the book anything more than a (spectacularly addicting) mindless pleasure? Kevin Kwan is as careful as he is funny, perceptive, and naughty, as he never lets his fabulously wealthy characters feel judged for their wealth alone. Instead, he casts doubt upon the wealth itself, updating the tale of Midas with luxury brands and high fashion. No one who falls for the spell is safe from corruption, and even the heroes are punished when they use wealth as a justification of themselves. The end result is one of the most entertaining sets of characters ever conceived, who seem all the more human contrasted against this wild opulence. Come for the koi ponds on private jets; stay for the smart maneuverings of a writer with insights as big as his characters' bank accounts. - JG, marketer.

The Forgotten Room: A Novel

The Forgotten Room (Jeremy Logan #4) - Lincoln Child Child's masterful use of vivid descriptions makes The Forgotten Room come alive in your hands. An intriguing story about "enigmalogist" Jeremy Logan digging up the secrets and abandoned projects of his past employer: a prestigious think tank. Revealing the crazy that lies behind innovation and intelligence, I was left grappling for the end; there was a reason Project S was hidden for years. Regardless of whether you have read the first two books, this is a must read for those interested in mystery and thriller.

Reagan: The Life

Reagan: The Life - H.W. Brands "This is a fascinating and insightful biography that seems to leave no stone unturned when it comes to the life of Ronald Reagan. Admittedly, I minored in US History in college, but I found this thorough account filled with amazing details and written in a way that humanizes one of most important Presidents in History. This is a triumphant portrayal of a man and a time in US History." - Lauren W., Doubleday Marketing Department

The Knockoff: A Novel

The Knockoff: A Novel - Lucy Sykes, Jo Piazza When a forty-something fashion magazine editor returns from a leave of absence to discover that she has a twenty-something boss, what could possibly go wrong? Plenty! The Knockoff is the real deal. It's the smartest, juiciest, most rip-roaringly hilarious novel of the summer. And I would say that even if I didn't work at Doubleday! Author Toby Young has said that it "makes The Devil Wears Prada look like My Little Pony" and he is 100% right. Don't even think of heading out for the beach or the pool without this gem in your tote. - Judy, Doubleday Marketing

The Half Brother

The Half Brother - Holly LeCraw "I'm a total sucker for novels set at private boarding schools in Holly LeCraw's The Half Brother appeals to adult readers who loved the ivy lined setting but crave the complexities of adult relationships. LeCraw's book is a literary coup and examines the complexities of love and loss with the perfect scenic backdrop." - Lauren, Digital Marketing

The Job: True Tales from the Life of a New York City Cop

The Job: True Tales from the Life of a New York City Cop - Steve Osborne When I first heard we'd be publishing this book, I had no idea it would be so timely. With NYC cops in the news so frequently now, Steve Osborne is the perfect voice to welcome us, hilariously, heartily, and sometimes harshly into the reality of the street beat. His life is not one of mayoral disputes, union negotiations, or media controversies; it's a life of stories, simple stories of humans he must hear and help. Now retired, Osborne works wonders retelling those stories he lived, and in doing so does his duty as a writer as well as he did as a cop. - JG, marketer
